A day off in every sense....Day 16

I was off work today and I got some errands done, cleaned the entire house (and I mean clean!) and relaxed for a bit!  I even gave my self a special treat and got a massage and a haircut at the gym!!  For once I didn't mind getting out in the cold to go to the gym! :-)
Heres the meal recap:

Breakfast: Muscle Milk Protein Shake
Snack: None
Lunch: High Protein Bowl - Chicken Teriyaki & Steamed Veggies w/ lobster rangoon @ CBW (delish!)
Snack: None
Dinner: Turkey Burger w/ Reduced Fat Provolone and tomato and onion w/ baked steak fries
Snack: Banana w/ Chocolate Jell-O Pudding Sundae (low fat, low points snack but very tasty! No icecream needed.)

I had planned on completing my work out after my massage, but my best pal Colene told me that you aren't supposed to workout after a massage.  Naturally I was going to anyway, but looked it up and turns out she was right (there I said it Colene! LOL)  Something to do with how soft and relaxed your muscles are afterwards that you can do more damage to them if you put a lot of weight on them.  So I just did the massage and haircut and came home.  I do feel relaxed however!  My muscles aren't as sore and I'm ready to go for tomorrow.

Just to put it on paper for everyone, my workout program is a 4 day workout split, so I can workout any 4 days that I want and take 3 days off, so I don't always have to do 4 consecutive days.  I don't want anyone thinking I'm skipping out of a workout for a massage! LOL.  Be sure to check out www.workoutbox.com if you want to learn more about what I'm doing for exercise.  It really is an awesome program and Travis and his team are fantastic support!  At only $9/month for a 26-week training program with real time support, you can't beat it!!  Whether you want to workout at home or at a gym, Workout Box has a program for you!

I did get a request to try and get a picture of the Sequin Gym Bag Boy and while I did promise never to bring him up again, I will do what I can to appease the masses and click a pic next time I see him at the gym, then you can see what all the fuss is about! LOL.  I try to keep it real and keep it entertaining at the same time.

I'm getting very close to hitting my first WW goal of 5% weight loss since I began, keep your fingers crossed, I will be SUPER excited once I hit it!! :-)  Until then kids....

Pandora's Box and The Return of Sequin Gym Bag Boy...Day 15

Well the positive spin from today is that it wasn't raining at all.  But it was SOOO cold!  Another one of those "do I really have to go mom?" type of gym days!  Here's a quick food recap:

Breakfast: 2 Eggo Wholegrain Waffles, 2 Jimmy Dean Turkey Sausage Patties (and no I didn't burn my shirt this time! LOL) w/ a Banana
Snack: Apple
Lunch: Turkey Sandwich on Whole Wheat w/ Simply Naked Pita Chips
Snack: Veggie plate w/ lite ranch dip
Dinner: St. Louis Bread Co. - Steak Balsamico w/ chips
Snack: Yoplait Frozen Smoothie (In 2 servings 1 pre and 1 post workout)

So today was Week 3 Day 1 of Inferno Standard from www.workoutbox.com.  Back to intensity intervals w/ cardio, I took it back to the treadmill as the intensity is more easily controlled and consistent, I burned a lot more calories than I did on the bike yesterday.  The weight section seemed short today, but I increased the weight amounts with the shorter number of reps.  Abs of course saw the return of Iron Cross Crunches and Bicycle Crunches....my arch nemesis!! I did great on the first set of bicycles, I made it all the way through without stopping.  By the time set 2 came around, my legs and abs were screaming and I had to take a couple of breaks.  All in all a good workout.

I promise this will be the end of me mentioning this, but it's just so intriguing.  I saw the return of Sequin Gym Bag Boy this evening.  I am guessing now that he is a good friend of the night supervisor, as he has been chatty-cathy with her the past few times I've seen him in there.  I wish that was how I could spend my gym visits and still look like he does....HATER (or better yet...HATE HER!)  I just don't get the sequin/bedazzled gym bag with what appear to be his initials.  I'm all about being out and proud....but turn down the flame a little girl....it's gettin hot up in this joint! LOL.

Driving home from Kentucky I rediscovered an old friend on my iPhone.....the Pandora App.  I queued up the "Beyonce" channel and away we went....Pandora delivered so many of my favorite jams from different artists...it was AWESOME!  So tonight at the gym I decided to give ole Pandora a try again as I have grown deeply tired of my iPod mixes.  Pandora delivered again....I had enough motivating music to push me through my workout and keep me going!  They've made some good improvements to the app as well.  I thoroughly enjoyed Pandora!  I will definitely be using it in the future! :-)

Back home, relaxing and about to head to bed.  I am off of work tomorrow and can't wait to sleep in and finally catch up on house chores!!

My gal pal asked me about posting another pic.  I probably will by the end of this week, although I don't think there is any visual difference yet.  A little definition in my legs and arms, but nothing to write home to mom about.  But it's all about the progression however great or small, so be on the look out for a follow up pic!  Until then kids....

I know why people get fat in the winter! (Day 14)

Not that it's a great life mystery solved or anything, but I realize now why people get fat in the winter.  Who wants to get out in all this mess?  I came home this evening, took care of the dogs and Mac (who is STILL sick and please get better soon!) had some leftover chili and fell asleep!  When I woke up it was 10pm and raining outside.  The last thing I wanted to do was leave the warmth of my blanket on the couch and go workout!  What always motivates me is this blog.  I never want to have to write "skipped my workout today".  Not that I have this overwhelming fan base that would be devestated that I missed a workout or anything, but I've set a goal to do something and wimping out because of a little cold rain is lame!  Here's a quick meal recap:

Breakfast: Jimmy Dean Ham Breakfast Bowl w/ Banana
Snack: Apple
Lunch: Healthy Choice Steamer - Chicken Margherita
Snack: Special K Protein Bar
Dinner: Chili w/ lean ground beef
Snack: Reduced Fat Peanut Butter Sandwich on whole wheat

So needless to say I got dressed, took the dogs out one last time and then headed for the gym.  I totally get why people don't workout as much in the winter...it's too cold and more of a hassle to get bundled up.  Oddly, my workout today seemed relatively easy.  I increased the amount of weights I usually do so I'm not sure what the issue was.

Today officially marked 14 days and the end of Week 2 of Inferno Standard from www.workoutbox.com.  Incidentally it was weigh in day as well.  Drumroll please.....

Starting Weight: 205.6lbs
Today's Weight: 202.6lbs
Difference: -3.00lbs
Total Weight Loss Since I Started WW: 6.4lbs (209.0lbs - 202.6lbs)

I was excited to see a loss, especially after a holiday weekend.  Trust me when I say that is not easy to do and was unexpected! :-)  Must have been that final push of cardio from last night!

One of my friends suggested today that we run a 5k race next spring.  I don't know about then...but right now the thought of running a 5k makes me want to lay down and sleep! LOL.  I told her I'd think about it and let her know when springtime came!  I guess it is a nice motivator.

Another one of my gal pals who is doing WW with me set a lofty goal of losing 3lbs per week until May.  I told her I'd be dead if I lost that much weight, but setting a per week goal is certainly helpful.  When you look at it as 2-3lbs a week rather than 40lbs overall, it seems more doable.  All I can really ask for is to keep losing each week, I'll take what I can get, but the more the better!!

Tomorrow I begin Week 3 of Inferno....can't wait...only 23 weeks to go!  Until then kids...

Too cold to workout! Day 13....

I thought today was going to be sunny and nice!?  So much for that...it was cloudy and cold all day!  I had resolved all day to make today Day 3 of Week 2 of Inferno Standard....to keep up withy my workouts.....you know how it is when you get home and it's cold out, but warm inside, you change into your comfy clothes and settle in for dinner and nightly TV?  There is almost nothing that will convince you to get back out.....well that was me today!  Here's the food recap.....

Breakfast: Egg Beaters, Turkey Bacon and Cheese on a bagel thin
Snack: None
Lunch: Broccoli, Carrots & Almonds w/ lite ranch (sounds minimal, but suprisingly a 6pt lunch)
Snack: None
Dinner: Chili w/ extra lean ground beef
Snack: None

Do back to the reluctance to workout.  I kept debating with myself back and forth on what I wanted to do.  For day 3 I only had to burn 290 calories w/ cardio, there was no strength training to do.  It seemed simple, but I didn't feel like driving 20 minutes to the gym and I hate the treadmill at the gym here in our complex.  What is a guy to do!!  I finally remembered that a while back I purchased EA Sports Active 2 for PS3.  I knew I could get an all over workout and burn the required calories, all in the comfort of my living room!!  So I popped in the game and went to it! I actually completed the workout twice on "Hard" intensity! :-)  It was a great workout...I forgot how much I actually enjoyed that.  I'm glad I rememered having that and glad that I followed through with the workout.

Sometimes it is hard to find the motivation to keep up, as I mentioned in my first blog, this isn't going to be easy and every day isn't going to be a victory.  Losing weight is about learning and keeping focused.  When I lack motivation for eating right or exercising, I keep going over the long term goal and why I am doing this and keep myself on track.  Does that mean that I will 100% of the time hit my workout goals? No.  Does it mean that every day will be filled with totally healthy meals? No.  What it means is that I know where I want to end up and where I'm coming from, that helps keep me focused and gets me back on track when I fall off.  No plan or person is perfect, if we were none of us would ever be fat! :-)

Here's to the end of week 2! (Actually 1 final day to go tomorrow, which is officially day 14)  Tomorrow is weigh in day....let's hope the holiday feasting and my 1 cup of Starbucks hot chocolate didn't do too much damage! :-)  Until then kids....

I'm baaaaack!!

So after a 3 day trip to Kentucky to visit family and friends for the holidays I am back!  I purposesly did not blog while I was away so that I could focus on my time with my family and friends as I do not get to see them very often.  It was a suprise visit so everyone was very excited to see me! :-)

When I began this blog, I did tell you that I would be honest about my daily activity where diet and exercise were concerned.  So to continue with that promise, I will tell you that I did not exercise at all while I was gone and my dietary choices were in line with traditional holiday/vacation style eating! :-)  At Thanksgiving dinner however I did limit myself to just one plate full, I did not go back through the line multiple times.  I did indulge in dessert as well.  For me, the holidays are a free zone....no points, no guilt.

Now that I have spent 3 days indulging and enjoying food and rest....it's time to get back on the wagon and continue this journey.  I'd like to get off at least 10 more pounds before Christmas.  That's an agreesive 2.5lbs per week....so I hope I can do it!!  I hope everyone enjoyed time with their family and friends and that you enjoyed all of the wonderful food that was shared.

I had an eye opening experience while I was in Kentucky.  Colene and I along with several other friends volunteered at a "Soup Kitchen" on Thanksgiving day for breakfast.  This is something Colene and her friends had done for a couple of years and this year I wanted to help.  It was very touching at how grateful these people were for the meal.  Most of them had nothing, some had a little, but not much to speak of.  It really made me realize that I am so fortunate to have the friends and family that I do and to be in the position I am in.  There were so many people there who just had nothing but the clothes on their back and a few other things.  Most through no fault of their own....just victims of unfortunate events and unable to bounce back on their own.  Be thankful and grateful for all that you have.  Stop milling over petty things and disputes in your relationships....and I encourage you if you ever can to reach out and volunteer in your community to give back where you can. (Thank you Colene for taking me with you to help serve others!)

Enjoy your weekend....until next time kids...

Day 9 and how dieting is a hazard.....

Today was mostly uneventful, however I will regail you with the tale of how dieting can sometimes be a hazard to your health, if you aren't paying attention.....but first, a recap:

Breakfast: 2 Eggo-Nutrigrain Whole Wheat waffles and 2 Jimmy Dean Turkey Sausage patties w/ Banana
Snack: Blackberries w/ Splenda
Lunch: Lean Cuisine Chicken and Bowtie pasta
Snack: None
Dinner: Chick-fil-a Chicken Sandwich w/ fries
Snack: None

Let me start off by saying that Chick-fil-a was DELISH...and a reason why I LOVE Weight Watchers....it allows me to eat things like that and still stay on track! :-)  It was impromptu...I did not plan to have that for dinner, but got unexpectedly stuck at the mall and couldn't help my urge to indulge!

Today's workout consisted of Ladder Runs but using the Eliptical Strider machine instead of a treadmill for 2 miles, increasing my speed every half mile.  Then it was on to weights.  I went to the gym very early this evening and it was PACKED.  I miss my late night workouts! LOL.  Today was about triceps, shoulders and back, followed by of course...you guessed it....abs!  Lots of crunches!!  Week 2 Day 2 of Inferno Standard from www.workoutbox.com.  Check it out.  They just came out with a mobile app so now I don't have to print my workouts anymore!!  So excited!

So you may be wondering how I learned today that dieting can be a hazard.  Well....I was at work and we do not have a toaster (although after today I may have to convince my boss that we need one. LOL)  So I put my waffles in the oven to toast them up.  I used to use the cookie baker, but it took an eternity to even get a slight cripiness to them, so I thought I'd go with the oven.  I set it on broil.  Amazingly this too still took forever!  So I go to the oven to turn my waffles over to toast the other side, not remembering it's on broil so the TOP burner is red hot.  I turn my waffles and pull my arm out and close the door.  I notice in my periphreal vision a bright flash, as I turned and looked, my right sleeve of my shirt was on fire!! YIKES!!  I quickly hit it with my hand and luckily put it out.  Brand new work shirt...ruined.  All for some frozen waffles....I was just trying to do the right thing and eat healthy.....so you see kids....dieting can be a hazard if you aren't paying attention!! :-)

Nothing else too exciting going on.  Everyone around seems to be sick....hope I don't get it too!!!  To those that are, please get better soon! :-)

Tomorrow is day 10....wow!!  Good Stuff!  Until then kids...

Gossip Girl Saved My Workout......Day 8

Just back from the gym...all showered and refreshed...WHEW!  What a workout.  Day 8 and here's the recap:

Today was weigh-in day...drumroll please.......

Starting Weight: 205.6lbs
Today's Weight: 203.6lbs
Difference: -2.0lbs

It may not seem like much, but 1-2lbs per week is a healthy weight loss goal and I am very excited!  I actually have lost more than that because I began Weight Watchers 2 weeks prior to blogging and started that at 209.0lbs so I've lost 5.4lbs in 3 weeks! :-)

Here's today's meals:

Breakfast: Jimmy Dean Turkey Sausage Breakfast bowl & apple
Snack: Blackberries w/ Splenda
Lunch: Turkey Bacon & Turkey Sandwich with fat free mayo on whole wheat
Snack: Weight Watchers Ice Cream Sandwich
Dinner: Greek wrap w/ Pepperidge Farm Baked Natural Cheese Crisps
Snack: None

So I've been catching up on Gossip Girl the past few days (I'm on Season 3 and I go in and out of watching it).  The end of this season has gotten really intense and it's been hard to stop watching!!

Tonight at the gym, I had 30 minutes of interval cardio to do.  I decided to change things up a bit and do the bike instead of the treadmill and spare my shins the pain.  Well, I forgot that the tradeoff for that was killing my hamstrings and calves! UGH!  5 minutes in it was the last place I wanted to be.  My gym music mix wasn't motivating me and I was on the verge of skipping cardio.  Then I thought...since I'm sitting here, why don't I turn on Gossip Girl while I workout! (I used my Netflix app on my iPhone)  GENIUS!  It totally took my mind off how exhausting my cardio was and the time practically flew by!!  I biked 10 miles in 35 minutes burning over 300 calories!! WOOT!  In essence..Gossip Girl saved my workout!

I finished with more legs and back exercises, a play off of Week 1 Day 1, different # of reps and used different weights.  The abs as usual were my least favorite with the return of Iron Cross and Bicycles.   But as usual after it was all over I felt better and knew I had done the right thing by sticking with it to the end!  Check out www.workoutbox.com if you are interested in what I'm doing for exercises.  It really is a fantastic site and VERY inexpensive professional training!

I am exhausted, not so exhausted however that I can't go into the living room and try out my new Zelda: Skyward Sword for the Wii!!  So super stoked.....might as well burn a few extra calories before bed, right! :-)  What can I say, I'm a kid at heart and a little in the face too! :-)  Is tomorrow day 9 already?  Time flies when you're losing weight!  Until then kids....

Day 7...Quiet on the home front....

Today was a quiet day.  It was cold and rainy outside and I had to work for 4 hours. Boo!  Here is a breakdown of my meals:

Breakfast: Bacon, Egg & Cheese on Cibatta w/ mixed fruit
Snack: None
Lunch: None
Dinner: Lomo Saltado (A tasty peruvian dish from the Weight Watchers Kitchen recipes)
Snack: TBD (Likely a WW smoothie)

Normally I'm not one to skip lunch or my daily snacks, but we had a late breakfast and I worked from 12-4.  I did however manage to fend off the craving for a chocolate chip cookie at work!

I'm gearing up for the start of Week 2 of Inferno from www.workoutbox.com, I previewed the workout and it ain't lookin too pretty!  Gotta hit it hard though!

While we all wait in anticipation of that workout however, here's another tale from the vault.  My friend Julie will appreciate this story.

If any of you recall in my back story, I talked about how I lost weight when I first moved to St. Louis.  I hired my friend Julie to train me at the gym that we both worked at.  Now Julie rarely took on new clients as she was fully booked with the people she was currently training, but she agreed to do this for me.  One thing you have to know about Julie is that she is a great friend, but an evil trainer.  Evil in the sense that she knows exactly how to torture you to get the results you want! :-)

Being new to the workout scene, pretty much any exercise we did I had something to say about it. (Imagine that....)  Julie would always give me advice on my diet and what I should and shouldn't be eating.  I rarely listened.

After I had lost several pounds, I began to feel pretty confident in myself and my workout abilities.  One day before leaving Julie reminded me of our training session the next day and she gave me very specific orders for breakfast - "You have to eat protein, sausage, eggs, something with a good source of protein and carbs!  Tomorrow is legs day and you will need your energy."  Uh-huh...ok girl, I hear you...bye!

The next morning I woke up and wasn't particularly hungry.  I reached for the Special K cereal.  It had protein and carbs, and the milk added to the protein, I should be fine!

I walk into the gym and Julie was finishing up with a client.  As I passed her she inquired about my breakfast and my reply was "Don't worry I'm fine, I had a bowl of Special K!"  Julie did not respond but went back to her client.

When we began she had me doing squats and lunges.  For added torture she made me do "Walking Lunges" WITH DUMBELLS!!  By around the second set (the details of this are fuzzy) I began to feel queasy and light headed.  I looked at Julie (not wanting to concede) and told her I had to use the bathroom.  I did indeed go to the bathroom, but it was to get away from the torture.  Nauseated and dizzy I lay in a stall on the bathroom floor, curled up in a ball.  You know how for some reason, the cold tile on your face makes you feel better?  I lay there for what seemed like forever.  Apparently someone went and told Julie that I was curled up on the floor in the bathroom.

I soon returned to continue our workout.  Julie had me on the leg press machine.  She started with light weights and I (in what looking back was a huge mistake) said to her "Is that all you got?  This is easy!"....Julie being the Nazi that she was...racked on more weight.....not so easy.  When we got to dead leg lifts I was about to die.  Julie looked at me, saw that I was turning green and told me to rack the weights.  I did so and sat on the bench.  Julie brought me some orange juice to help eleveate my blood sugar, which due to my wonderful breakfast had plummeted!

She then looked at me and said "Next time I tell you to eat something for breakfast, maybe you will listen.  We're done for the day."

Indeed we were done for the day.  I think I went home and crawled in bed and slept for a long while.  After that I never questioned Julie's diet advice again.  After we were finished training I had lost over 30lbs and looked great!!! (Ah, to be 21 again!)

The lesson here is, it is essential to eat a healthy breakfast and never work out on an empty stomach.  Starving yourself is no way to lose weight!  Especially if you are doing a leg intensive weight training that day!  EAT! :-)

Workout Box doesn't really provide too much guidance on WHAT you should eat, but they do give you a guide for how many calories, carbs, fat and protein grams you should be eating each day based on whether or not that day is a workout day.  I typically work out in the evening and I always have protein in my dinner so I usually have plenty of energy to finish my work outs.

Do you have any favorite workout tips or exercises to share? :-)

Week 2 begins tomorrow.....until then kids...

Day 6: Early Thanksgiving....

Today we had an early Thanksgiving with Macs family and it was super yummy! Against the standard dietary advice, I skipped lunch in order to accommodate a most filling dinner!

Breakfast: Turkey Bacon and Egg Beaters w/cheese breakfast sandwich on a bagel thin w/a banana
Snack: Apple
Lunch: None
Snack: 1 Chocolate Chip Cookie
Dinner: Thanksgiving favorites - turkey, dressing, potatoes, casseroles and 1 piece of carmel pecan cheesecake.

I wanted to take a moment to first thank everyone who has sent their words of encouragement and support for my blog and my weight loss.  Your support encourages me to keep going and do better.  I am grateful to those who say that I have inspired them also and send you my support as well!  Please keep sharing this with your friends and family, the more support we all can have, the better!!

Furthermore I want to say that there is A LOT of diet and weight loss information out there.  So much in fact that people (including myself) can get very confused about what is right and what is wrong, what is a hoax and what really works.  The truth of it all is, no one thing works for every single person.  We all metabolize food differently, our bodies carry weight differently, some of us have more weight to lose than others.  There is not a generic coverall that works for every person who wants to lose weight.  You have to find the one that works best for you and your body and lifestyle.  One thing that is for certain, no weight loss is easy, quick, effortless or painless.  You have to work at it.  Pills won't "melt the pounds away" in 2 weeks.  Liquid diets won't make you 10lbs lighter in 48 hours.  Crash dieting is harmful and is not an effective form of weight loss.  I hear people say all the time, "Oh I am only eating 600 calories a day and I'm losing weight!"  Well DUH!  You absolutely will lose weight eating that little.  But once you start eating more than that, it will all come back plus more!  Our bodies naturally burn calories, even by laying in bed all day we burn 1200-2000 calories a day just with normal bodily functions.  When you factor in movement, it's even more.  If you only consume 600 calories a day you are looking at a deficit of up to 1400 or more calories, which is very unhealthy.  Always consult your doctor before doing a serious weight loss plan, and be sure to read reviews about what you want to do.  Make sure it is healthy, effective and sustainable.  You want something you can maintain long term, not a short term fix that will have you gaining it all back once you are done.

I am a believer in the new Weight Watchers system and I know it works because it works for me.  It's something that works for nearly everyone who tries it.  Again, it may not be for EVERYBODY, but it's definitely something sustainable and healthy.  If you ever have any questions or need some support or motivation, I am more than happy to help.  I'm not an expert, but I can tell you what I have learned on my quest to lose weight and share it with you.  If you find anything that works great for you and want to share with me, please do!

Good luck to everyone who is looking to lose weight in a healthy, effective manner, you can do it!  Don't wait for the New Year to make a resolution, start NOW and be looking great BEFORE the New Year starts!  To those who have lost weight recently and before, CONGRATULATIONS!  Especially to my sister-in-law Victoria Elridge who recently dropped 60lbs and who I know looks SPECTACULAR after having 2 kids!  Way to go V, you are another source of inspiration!!

Day 7 approaches, until then kids.....

And now a word from our sponsor......(Day 5 Recap)

Today's blog is brought to you by: Spanx (they're not for everyone)

So having a break from the gym yesterday after dinner I pretty much fell right asleep!  4 days of working out at 11pm at night gets to you after a while! :-)  Here is a recap of day 5:

Breakfast: Jimmy Dean Turkey Sausage Breakfast Bowl & Banana
Snack: Apple
Lunch: Turkey Sandwich on whole wheat with Lays Chips & Pudding cup
Snack: Blackberries
Dinner: (Dipped into those bonus points finally! LOL) Houlihans Chicken Fingers & Fries.  Although they were more like chicken bites than fingers....
No Snack after dinner.

Since there are no workout details today I will take some time to tell a nice story from the past related to my struggles with weight loss.  Colene will be very excited that I am finally telling this story to the world as she was on the phone with me prior to and after the following events took place.  I hope you enjoy a laugh at my expense. :-)

I have always been one to try anything that helped me lose weight or even gave the ILLUSION that I have lost weight.  All that really mattered was what I looked like in my clothes.  I've tried tummy trimmers and waist belts and sauna suits, to name a few.  Well one day I was traveling through Nordstroms.....no wait...I have to back up a bit.  A few weeks (maybe even a month or so) prior to this I was with Colene in Dillards in Kentucky.  We were shopping just to be shopping and I came across a table display for Spanx.  Now if you don't know what Spanx are, get out from under your rock! LOL.  I had no idea they made them for men however.  I always hear people make jokes ("it took 2 pair of Spanx to get this dress on")  So I looked at Colene and asked "Should I buy one?"  Well she is always an advocate of "Do what you want it's your money, but I don't think you need it" kind of thing.  So I look at the price....$60!!!!  For one shirt!!!!  Are they real?  Needless to say the benefit did NOT outweigh the cost in this scenario.

I digress.

So I'm walking through Nordstroms and I come across (would you believe) a shelf display full of Spanx!  I'm on the phone with Colene and I'm like "I think it's a sign....but do I really want to spend $60?" then I ask her "Do you think the lady will let me try one on?"  Colene says I should ask her and see.  So I find the register lady and ask to try on a pair of Spanx (the t-shirt) and she shows me to the dressing room.  At this point I tell Colene I'll call her back as I am going to try this on and see what it does.

All sounds pretty normal up to this point, right?

Ok...so if you know me, you know that when I buy clothes I always give myself WAY too much credit on the size....scaling over the 200lb mark, I asked that lady for a medium.  Really?  Hear me out....my thought was, if the large would make me look 10lbs thinner, maybe a medium would make me look 15-20lbs thinner, I mean it sounds logical...the tighter the shirt the smaller the stomach.  So anyway.....I pull this shirt out of the box, mind you it's a plain white shirt that looks like its about 4 sizes too small for me.  I'm thinking, it's supposed to be small because it fits snuggly around your body.  I proceed to pull off my regular t-shirt and then attempt to put on the Spanx shirt.  I say attempt because it was quite a chore.  Halfway into the shirt I realize.....d*mn...I should have asked her for a large.  Too late at this point, I'm committed, so I proceed to pull the shirt over my head and shoulders, squeezing it down over my chest and stomach and suddenly, it compressed my midsection and my ability to breath was somewhat diminished.  I look in the mirror, it really just looked like a fat kid wearing his younger brothers tshirt. Ugh!  So I put on my regular tshirt to see how I looked with clothes on.  I will admit I looked smaller, but the way I was compressed it was uncomfortably obvious it was not natural!

Disappointed and even more depressed...I decided it was time to take off the shirt and get back to my shopping.  I remove my shirt and start to pull up on the Spank shirt, I got half way up to my chest and I couldn't move.  The shirt was so tight it that when I bunched it at the top I couldn't stretch it out to take it off.  Oh snap!  I started to slightly panic.  Stay calm...stay calm.....ok.  I grab one side of the Spanx shirt and start pulling as hard as I could to get my arm out, after a struggle I finally get it up over my head.  The garment was so constricted at this point it got stuck.  Here I am in the Nordstrom dressing room, one arm in and one arm out, Spanx stuck over my head, I kept bumping into the door trying to pull myself free.  I'm thinking...it would be most awkward to yell for assistance and have that lady see me in this shape.  At this point I was breathing very heavily, sweat was pouring from my head as I kept struggling to remove the shirt.  I finally gave it one last tug with all my remaining strength, heaving and panting and grunting (if anyone was in the dressing room next to me they likely thought I was dying or having a seizure) but I kept pulling and finally....FREEDOM!  Mind you I nearly fell over and hit the wall, but I was out of the Spanx!  Bad..bad idea, definitely not worth $60.

So I put my shirt back on, stuff the Spanx shirt back into the box.  Sweaty, red faced, still breathing heavy and hair looking a disheveled mess, I calmly return to the register.  The lady looked at me like I was crazy and says "How did that work out?"....."I don't think it's going to work for me, but thank you for your help."  I walk calmly out of the department, up the escalator and left the mall, calling Colene on my way to the car to share my most unfortunate experience with Spanx.

So you see, we all go through GREAT lengths and pains to try and look thinner.  Men are no exception.  Mind you, I probably burned several calories with that episode, but me and Spanx are officially over.

I hope you enjoyed my stroll down memory lane.....alas it is time for me to get ready for work.  Tonight we are having Thanksgiving dinner with Mac's family.....I can't wait!!!

Until next time kids...

The Apocalypse and Chinese Food....Day 4

The word Apolcalypse comes to us from the Greek word -  apokálypsis. One of the meanings from the dictionary is - any universal or widespread destruction or disaster.

Now that we have had our English lesson for the day, let's take a look at what day 4 had in store for me!

Breakfast: Jimmy Dean Turkey Sausage Bowl & Banana
Snack: Apple
Lunch: Lean Cuisine Turkey and Sweet Potatoes (most unappealing and not filling at all) & chocolate pudding cup
Snack: Baby Carrots
Dinner: Sweet & Sour Chicken w/ Fried Rice and Egg Roll (I assure you it was delicious)
Snack: Gatorade Recovery (post workout)

My workout today was Week 1 Day 4 of Inferno Standard from www.workoutbox.com

Today's workout consisted of 24 minutes of interval cardio.  Basically every 2 minutes I increased the speed I was running and every 3rd 2 minute interval I decreased the speed.  At the end of the run I am certain I felt my soul begin to leave my body until the time finally ran out and I got a break!  It was intense!

For strength it was all about legs.  Legs, legs and more legs.  Squats, dumbell squats, leg press, lunges.  Then they did a work over on my biceps.  Finally we move on to what Travis Steffen calls "Ab Apocalypse".  If you recall my prior definition, nothing could be more true.  My abs were destroyed and I felt like I wanted to hurl when I was finished! :-)  The only positive spin was that I didn't have to do bicycle or Iron Cross crunches!  All in all about a 1 hour and 45 min workout!

As for the Chinese food....let me explain.  1, my lunch was bogus and should not even be counted.  Meanwhile I avoided Pizza Hut that my boss ordered for everyone this afternoon and stuck to my turkey and potatoes from LC.  2, I had 30 points left over for the day on WW and instead of ordering WHOLE portions as usual, I only got the dinner portion for both Mac and me and I declined any crab rangoon.  I still have all my bonus points in tact along with about 25 activity points...so I'm very much on target with my diet where WW is concerned!  Sometimes you have to indulge to succeed!

Meanwhile at the gym we saw the return of sequin gym bag boy.....it just fascinates me. LOL.

Well my arms and legs are about to fall off and it is nearly 2am, I must get some sleep!  I get 3 days off from the gym and I can't wait!!!  I'll still be blogging my diet and other anecdotes so stay tuned, day 5 begins soon.

Until then kids....

Swimming pool...hot tub...steam room. In that order!

Day 3 was a nice relaxing day, I was off work today!  Here's the breakdown:

Breakfast: Chocolate-Peanut Butter/Banana Smoothie (Weight Watchers Recipe)
Snack: Banana
Lunch: Turkey Burger w/ fries (had a great lunch with my gal pal Tonya!!)
Dinner: Cobb Salad (Weight Watchers Recipe) & Turkey Sandwich
Snack: Weight Watchers Ice Cream Sandwich (Post Workout)

Todays Workout was Week 1 Day 3 - Inferno Standard from www.workoutbox.com

All I had to accomplish in today's workout was to burn 270 calories!  I spent 30 minutes doing laps in the pool!  It was very nice!  I then soaked in the hot tub for 10 minutes followed by 10 minutes in the Steam Room!  My sore muscles were very grateful!  Tomorrow I round out day 4 of my Week 1 workouts and then 3 days off!!! :-)

I had to pick up Mac from work today (for those that don't know he is a Store Mgr for Starbucks).  While standing in the lobby waiting, I was highly tempted to order a Grande Salted Carmel Hot Chocolate, seeing as it was cold outside!  I resisted, TWICE!  But it sounded sooooo good!  Trust me when I say it took a great amount of will power!  Later in the evening, Colene had to remind me of how tasty the Sonic Peanut Butter shakes are....grrrrr....those are my FAVORITE!  I just keep remembering all of the hard work I've put in the past few days and don't want to ruin it with a milkshake!!

That's pretty much all for today, nothing terribly exciting, but sometimes less excitement is a good thing!  Tomorrow is a new day and day 4! Bring it!

Until then kids...

Day 2 - Ladder Runs, Weighted Crunches and....Sequin gym bags?

End of day 2 and I am feeling it!  Here's a break down of my day:

Breakfast: 2 Jimmy Dean Turkey Sausage Patties, 2 Eggo Nutrigrain Waffles w/ Splenda
Snack: Banana
Lunch: 9 Slices of Oscar Meyer Thin Sliced turkey w/ 1 slice of Kraft Cheese and mustard on a Bagel Thin w/ 1 single serving of Garden Salsa Sun Chips
Dinner: 2 small lean, baked pork chops (Weight Watchers recipe) steamed broccoli and dinner rolls
Snack: Chocolate-Peanut Butter & Banana shake (post workout) - A DELICIOUS Weight Watchers Recipe, a definite must try!

My workout was Week 1 Day 2 of Inferno Standard from www.workoutbox.com

Today's workout began with 2 miles of cardio.  Seems simple enough on the surface....however, every 1/2 mile I had to increase the speed.  Not trying to "phone it in" as my ex-friend Jillian Michaels used to say, I started at 5.0 and ended at 7.0 mph.  Suffice it to say that the other people in the gym thought I either was dying or overly dramatic.  Maybe a little of both? :-)  Then after some intense arm, chest and shoulder workouts we get to abs.  My absolute LEAST favorite of exercises.  Today they introduced "weighted" crunches....where you hold a weighted medicine ball over your head and do standard crunches for 40 seconds, twice.  Oh-my-stars!  This followed by 80 seconds of regular crunches and 25 seconds of alternating Supermans, repeated once.  My abs are screamin!!  I feel great though...While these workouts are pretty tough...they are no Julie J workouts! LOL.  Julie, if you are reading this...I do miss our torture sessions together!  You really were an awesome trainer, and are a great friend! (Hey atleast I'm eating more than Special K for breakfast! LOL)

As I was leaving the gym, I was walking down the stairs to the locker room and a young guy was walking up past me.  He was probably early 20's, reasonably good looking, very fit, jock-type guy.  Well, if you know me, you know I did the double take look back as he passed (well!)...I see that he is wearing a decked out, sequin bedazzled gym bag!!  HUH?  Really?  Hey girl...! LOL.  If you can make it work....work it is all I can say! :-)

I was talking to my gal pal Colene today and telling her that while doing my grocery shopping today I saw a lady who was extremely obese (325-350)...she should have been in a scooter, but instead she was hunched over her cart stuffed with bacon, pizza and hostess snacks, trudgin along in the Wal-Mart.  I feel for you ma'am, because I know all that weight can't be easy to carry....but ma'am, a word if I may......PUT DOWN THE F'N BACON.  I'm just sayin......she actually gave me additional motivation to keep doing what I'm doing....I refuse to be her in 5 years.

Well, that is all I have for day 2.  Things are going well and I feel really good about this.  I've gotten a great response from everyone and had over 70 views in the past 2 days on my posts!! Keep it up everyone...share with as many people as you can, you can never have enough support!!! :-)

Tomorrow is a new day and day 3!  Bring it on.  Until then kids....

My workout routine comes from Workout Box - Inferno.  You can check out this awesome site at www.workoutbox.com.  Travis Steffan is a genius and they have so many different programs to fit your goals and body type, whether you want to workout at home or at a gym Workout Box has a program for you!  Some programs are flat rate, and some are monthly charge (around $10).  With each program you get personalized support, real time by real people!  I HIGHLY reccommend it!

27 Minutes of Cardio followed by about 45 min of Strength training and ab workouts.  WHEW!

Day 1 (Post workout) :-(
I've also posted a picture (post workout) from Day 1.  Note the frowney face....depicting the level of dissatisfaction I have when I look in the mirror.  But that's all going to change and I can't wait!

Some people ask me where I have gotten my inspiration to do something so significant.

Enter Colmon and Colene.

Colmon and Colene are my brother and sister (from anotha mutha) and best friends of 20 years.  Growing up, Colmon like myself was an overly proportinate child.  For a good portion of his adult life as well.  I don't know exactly how it happened, but one day I came home and Colmon was 100lbs thinner!  He looked AMAZING!  He did it all on his own through diet and exercise and sheer will.  I thought....well now I look even fatter! Thanks Colmon! :-)

And then there is Colene.  Colene was always a beautiful and attractive girl.  She refers to herself as a young Tyra Banks (why tell her otherwise!)  Colene got into a long term relationship and like so many of us before her, settled in not only to the relationship but to her body as well.  As she puts it..."How come nobody told me I swoll up?"  In all honesty when you are such close friends with someone, you don't really look at them physically or superficially, so it never really dawned on me.  Colene like her brother took it upon herself to do something about it and started exercising and became VERY active in Bikram Yoga.  I can't even say how much she has lost, but she too now looks AMAZING.

These two individuals, along with being my two bestest pals for 20 years have inspired me in more ways than one.  I know that making such a drastic change is possible because they are living proof.  And even though they would never tell me to my face....ya'll know I done swoll up a little too! LOL.  Thank you both for being the trail blazers in the family and setting a precedent to encourage and motivate me to do better!

So that's day 1.  Seems so miniscule when we're talking a lifetime...one day.  But before you know it, day 1 will be day 30 and day 30 will be day 365, let's hope we are all for the better this time next year.

Bring on day 2, I'm ready!!!  Until then...

The back story.......

So I'm sitting here in my room, looking out of the patio door, listening to the dull roar of the highway thinking about how to begin.  The cliche is that you should alwasy start from the beginning.  Well NO DUH genius!  The question is exactly HOW to begin.  Many of you who will be reading this already know everything about it and for those who don't, we would need a LifeTime made for TV movie in a 3 part series to get you caught up. :-)

So I will provide you with a brief back story and why I decided to start this blog, or better yet, revive an old idea.

I'm 32 (excuse me, I just threw up a little in my mouth) yes, 32! Much of my life I have been self concious of the way I look.  I hated the fact that I was shorter than most people, when I was younger I had the dreaded "acne" face, in my earliest of years I wore the coke bottle style eyeglasses.  Yes through the years I have been quite a sight for some to see.  While I outgrew the glasses, got over the fact that I wasn't getting any taller and discovered face wash in my latter teen years for the acne, my weight was something that I always struggled with. They say weight can be genetic, LIES!  My mom is skinny, my sister is skinny, both of my brothers are skinny, my dad was fat but got skinny.  I had skinny ALL AROUND ME!  Clothing was the worst though. I mean, imagine my self-esteem when my parents took me to Wal-Mart and bought me jeans in a size 16 (Husky).  Please take a moment to laugh.  For any of you who also endured the dreaded "Husky" clothing era, I empathize with you.  For those who did not, you struggle to feel my humiliation.  And it wasn't bad enough that the tag said it, but it was PRINTED on the leather patch of the jean.  I might as well have worn a t-shirt that said "Caution: Fatty coming through!" Oh I chuckle at it now, but when you're 14 going into your first year of high school it's mortifying.  Why didn't they have Spanx back then? (a great story about Spanx at a later date to come. Stay tuned!)

When I turned 19 I decided for various reasons that I would move to St. Louis, MO.  I won't get into the details of why here (that's a whole other blog!)  When I moved here I weighed in at a moderate 185-190 around that time, and while that doesn't seem dramatically overweight, to me, I might as well have weighed 400 pounds.  I needed to do something to get skinny!  Ironically one of my first jobs in St. Louis was a Front Desk Attendant at a local gym.  Can you imagine...this young chubby kid trying to peddle a gym membership to folks?  I could hear their thoughts..."Don't they give you a free membership?"  "Instead of peddling this to me, you should be peddling that bike over there"  Needless to say I was out of place.

Enter Julie.

Now Julie was a personal trainer at this gym.  Some people called her Nazi. (Ok, I called her Nazi) because she was hardcore, but she knew how to get results.  As an employee I got a discount on personal training, so I thought I'd take advantage of it.  I asked Julie if she would train me and she agreed.  Now I don't have the time or space to get into all the fun stories of me being trained (and believe me they are interesting!) but suffice it to say that Julie got results.  I got down to 150lbs and a 31" waist.  Would you believe at that point, I still thought I was fat?  Never satisfied...

I felt amazing at 21 years old and 150lbs, heck I LOOKED amazing and finally I felt like I fit in with the other skinny, good looking people I had dreamed about being like.

Here I sit at 32, and let me tell you my age is lower than my waist size now!

So why the big push now, why does it mean so much for me to get in shape now?  And why don't I just call Julie to train me into shape?  Well for starters, ole Julie skipped off to Texas (thanks Jules! LOL)

And reasons as to why I want this now?  I've wanted this my whole life, I've just never been able to achieve it permanently.  I don't need to be 150 pounds again in fact I don't think I'd look that great at 150 pounds.  I just want to be in shape and to look in the mirror and stop frowning at what I see.  I want to be able to control my eating habits and not look like such a pig when I eat, always going back for thirds and fourths.  I'm sick and tired of being fat, pudgy, thick, curvy, husky, chunky, heavy set, big boned, whatever you want to call it, I'm done with it!

So I made a declaration to myself.  Starting Monday November 14, 2011 I will no longer accept being over weight.  I am going to pour my time and energy into getting into shape no matter what.  This blog is way for me to hold myself accountable and to build a little (or big) support group of friends and family who can encourage me to keep going when I don't want to keep going and who can celebrate with me when I achieve a victory.  In this blog I will be up front, blunt and honest about my daily struggles, victories etc.  I'll be sharing my weight, nutrition, work out routines and all the in between.  Along the way you'll learn about many of my friends and family members as I relive moments from the past, for as they say we learn from history!  I'm not saying it's going to be easy and that every day will be a victory, in fact I'll tell you up front it won't be, but at least we can endure it together and maybe get a few laughs along the way!

So that's it.  Sorry we took a sort of long road to a short answer.  I just realized that my blog application allows videos and photos too, so expect me to get creative and do some before and after shots along with some video blogging throughout the process.   2 years ago I issued myself a challenge to lose weight and I raised money to support a good cause.  This time, I don't want a challenge because there is no deadline, there is no finish line, this time it's about changing my lifestyle for good, not just for a few weeks or months.  Say goodbye to fatty mcfatterton.....he dies tonight.

Thank you all in advance for your support and encouragement, I hope you enjoy this blog.  Please share it on Facebook or through email with your other friends or family members, the more support the better.  And feel free to join me - if you are wanting to make a change for yourself, I'd be happy to support and encourage you too!

Tomorrow it all begins.......until then kids.
